Weapon That Hit The U-boats Hard
WELLINGTON, March 9. The squid, a naval secret weapon which caused. devastation among U boat packs in the latter slages of the last war, was revcaled during naval exercises at sea ofli Kaikoura this afternoon. The veils of sccrecy imposed during and since the war, were lilted as anti-submarine spccialists tested thcir weapons on mock target's. The squid, cxact detiiils of which are still secret, is a threo-barrelled mortar which fires heavy charges with great, accuracy to exiilode at a sct depth in the water. Great niounds of blue w ater and fountains of spray rose in the air as many charges of the Weapon exploded together. The foree of the explosion rocked each ship in the llotilla with the foree of an earthquakc. The tiring
apparatus of the squid is trained by radar to fire at a surfaee target sueh as a subinarine, cruising while charging its batteries. The exercises are part of convoy manoeuvres with the Bellona protected bv a sereening foree of four frigates under Commander L. P. Bourke in the Taupo.
