West Really On Wartime Footing

A claim that during 1948 both* Britain and America turned their economies baek from a peacetime to a wartime footing, is made by Mr. W.* Macmahon Ball, formerly British Commonwealth member of the Allied Council in Japan, in an artiele pubiished by the Commonwealth Office of Education. "In the first quarter of the year the United States and in the last quarter the United Kingdom, launched" a "*rearmament programme of immense proportions," he said. "Never in modern history before has any nation switched its economy from a peacetime to a wartime basis and still been able to get baek to peacetime eonditions going through the ordeal of ' war. Today the distortion of the truth is prevalent everywhere but I am aware that the Soviet is a master of this kind of distortion," \
