CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. It was not true to say that the assistant engineer, Mr. R. G. Brickell, at the Lake Tekapo hydro-electric job had been stripped of authority as a result of th'e strike negotiations at Tekapo recently, said the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple. His attention had been rirawn to a newspaper statement in which it was claimed that authority had been taken from Mr. Brickell, said the Minister. The statement, he understood, did not emanate from headquarters of the workers' union and certainly 'did not come from a Government sourCe. The assurance given to the ,men, and on which they returned to work, was that Mr. Brickell would follow the normal course of making contact with the workmen through the overseers and foremfen, stated Mr. Semple, and that he would observe both the leTter and the spirit of the workers' agreement. "It can be taken for granted," sai'd- the Minister, "that no engineer of my department will be stripped of the authority necessary for him to carry out his duties."
