Attaeked By Pack Of Pig .Dogs An attack by a pack of pig dogs upon a Maori who is said to haVe been extremely lucky to escape with his life was described by a witness in the Magistrate's Court in Ruatoria when two Opotiki drovers were charged with allowing dangerous dogs to be at large. The evidence showed that the Maori was walking along a road at Hicks Bay when he was rushed by a pack of five dogs, one. of which tore at his leg and brought him to the ground. The whole pack struggled over his prone body and he received another bite under an armpit as ihe* raised his arms to protect his face and head.
The witness stated that if the owners of the dogs had not come along and driven off the pack the Maori might have been ki.led. Two of the dogs were destroyed by the defendants immediately. Taking nto account the heavy expenses involved for the transport of witnesses, the Magistrate fixed the fines at £1 eac hand ordered the fines at, £1 "each and ordered the £8 19s expenses.
