WESTERN UNION DEFENCE

(N.Z.P.A.-

-Reuter,

"Monty" Preparing Plan For Any Emergency

Copyrigtit)

Receivedi Friday, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, March 4. The Defence Minister, Mr. A. V. Alexander, told the House of Commons that the Western Union organisation, under Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery was studying the tactical problems of the 'defence of Western Europe and "preparing plans for action in any sudden emergency." He added: "There is no doubt that the significance is fuliy recognised by our friends throughout the world." Mr. Alexander was opening the debate on the Government's statement on defence, which accompanied the defence budget last month. This budget provides for an expenditure of £75,986,000 for the "*'ear 1949-50, an increase of £10,750,000 on the current year. The total strength of Britain's armed forces, which will be 793,000 on April 1 of this year, will be reduced to 750,000 by April, 1950. The Government's statement expiained that the incre'ased expenditure, despite the decrease in numbers, was due to increased rates of pay, the increased cost of equipment and administration of occupied territories and the necessity for sending abroad extra forces to reinforce local security measures. -- -- -"T--
