Successful Concert

Varie.y, which included some amusing humour, was offered patrons who attended the concert; ! organised by the Farmers' Queen j Committee, and held at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday , nigtu. 1 Despite inclement weather, there was a very fair atten'dance and a generous measure of app'ause was accorded each perfofmer. The Otaki band opened proceedings with a shorV number, followed by Mrs. L. Styles wi h a bracket of humorous recitations. Noel McKay, famous for his dual voice and whistling capabilities, more than satisfied his listeners. A new member of the 2ZB party, but not a stranger to Otaki, Mr. Ernie Dean, after some humorous anecdotes, entertained with a me-dley of airs on the piano, after which the ,beautiful voice of Mrs. Hesp again thrilled her listeners. Miss Valma Hunt, contortionist dancer, was eiven a well deserved ovation on

completing her fascinating act, and another new artist named Baffles certainly had the audience and his assistants,-drawn from among those present, baffled with his magic. During the second half of the programme the compere, Mr. Maurice Hawken, invited' supporters of the Farmers' Queen to make donations on the spot to further improve the position of the Queen, Miss Edna Taylor, and a large number of cash donations were forthcoming, some of fairly l.arge dimensionS. A musical quiz caused rnuch merriment, as did community singing with the dress circle competing against the stalls. At the conclusion of the ' performance, the chai'rman of the Farmers' Queen Committee, Mr. J. Miller, thanke'd all artiSts, and they were presented with gifts as a token of appreciation. Proceedings were brought to a close with the band playing the National Anthem, following which the visitors were entertained at supper.
