Four New Swimming Records In Championships

AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. Four ,national records were establish ed in the third day of the New Zealand senior swimming championships " today. The Olympic Games representative (Miss Ngaire Lane) reduced her own record for the *100 yards backstroke from 72 to 70.8secs, and Miss B. Casey (Wellington) broke Miss K. Grey 's ten-year-old record for the women's 10U yards freestyle event with. a time of 63.2'secs compared with Miss Grey's time of G3.6secs. Both these records were established in special attempts at the tepid baths where the > conditions of flie shorter length — 33J yards — and salt water were more favourable than the 55-yard Olympic fresh water pool.
In, addition to these performances both Miss N. Bridson (Auckland) and T. Logan (Taranaki) established times which will be applied for as records. In winning the women's and men's medley championships Miss Bridson 's time was 76.8secs and Logan 's 68.6secs. Men's and women's long-distance championships were decided over three miles, C. Conza (Auckland) winning the men's title and Miss M. Craney (Auckland) the women's. Conza also secured first place in the Annette Kellerman' Cup race decided on handicaps concurrently with the championship event. The results of the day's events were: — Men's long-distance championship: C. Conza (Auckland) lhr 30mins 42secs, 1; D. T. O'Koufke (South Canterbury) lhr 35mins O.Gsecs, 2; .T. Bolt (Auckland) lhr 35mins 33secs, 3. Women's long-distance: Miss M. Craney (Auckland) lhr 47mins 58secs, ] ; Miss J. Hodges (Hawke's Bay) lhr 48mins 22secs, 2; Miss P. Hastings (Auckland) 2hr 2mins lOsecs, 3. Kellerman Cup handicap: Conza, 7mins, 1; Bolt, Omins, 2; F. Hall (Auckland ) 20mins, 3. Men's Medley, one length backstroke, oue length breaststroke* one length freestyle: T. Logan (Taranaki) 1, C. Callan (Auckland) 2, W. Basley (Southland) 3. Time, GS.Gsecs. Won by three yards. Women's Medlcj : Miss N. Bridson (Auckland) 1, Miss J. Stewart (Otago) 2, Miss .T. Ilodges (Hawke's Bay) 3.Time. 7G.8secs. Won by four yards.
