Sugar Shortage Grim, Says Master Grocer
AUCKLAND, Feb. 25 There were signs that supplies oi sugar might he better in the n^xt few weeks, said a, spokesrpan for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company Ltd. Delivefies had heen normal during the. week, he ad.ded. In the . ipeantime the quota system, which is based on average purchases made by dili'erent firms. b.etween January and June last year, would remain in force. The company was sending shipments ta the South ' Island as shipping opportunities offered. However, it was* too early to judge the fuU effects of the quota system. The. shortage was affecting consumers just at a time when sugar was wanted for bottling and jam-making; said a representative of the Master Grocers. Describing the sugar -shortage as ' ' grim, ' ' . he s.aid, that some grocers had not had any sugar for as much as. ten days. It was a Domin-ion-wide, shortage, he added. There wa? a time iag in deliveries to he overtaken, and he thought that this was the big difftculty. T He saw no inmycdiate prospect of relief for the ftqusewifQ.
