There was keen competitiou in the men 's* 100 yards freestyle) and the intermediate boys' 100 yards frfeestyle. but there were too many races with only one -competitor making the journey. . In the longer distanees such as the 220 yards solo swimminj* failed to hold the public interest. The weather, although thi-eatening immediately before the carnivai, remained warm and fine and there was a large attendance «of 'the public. ' The carnivai was opened by the Mayor, Mr. Tremaihe.
