Will Have To Pay More To Use Roads

AUCKLAND, Feb. 22. A forecast that road users would be called on to pay more for the use ot roads, was given by Mr. F. M. II. Hanson, ehief engineer of the Main Higliways Board, Wellington, at the confer ence.of the New Zealand Institution of .Engineers. "At present the allocation to this fund is entirely out of date,"'said Mr. Ilanson. "An adjustment must be : made and you will all h_ave to pay more for the use of roads." Mr. Hanson was taking part in a discussion on the effect of modern traffie on New Zealand roads. He said that some basis must be found to determine what was to..be hauled on road and on rail. Motor importers were asking for a decision, on axle-loads and truck operators were in a quandarv over the classificatioh of roads. The j whole position was chaotic and a reasonable balance should be reached between the cost of roading and cost of hauling. . County councils, engineers, tfie T-rans-port 'department, road users and other s had held conferences and he iio^ied that the position would soon be clarified.
