Handsome Bequest To People Of Hawera
HAWERA, Feb. 21. An amount - estimated between £12,000 and £15,000 has been bequeacbed for "the eul'tural, educatitn&l, and physical development of the people of Hawera and surrounding distrie't" by the late Miss Catherine Marton Biiehanaii, who died at Hawera on December 21. Speeial trustees, Messrs. F. W. Horner (solicitor) and C. G. Trotter (company manager), both of Hawera, are empowered to apply the trust fund, wholly or in part, to the erection and equipment of a youth centre, musefim, art gailery, or other public amenity. A number of Dominion-wide organisations and charities with which the deceased was assoeiated will benefit by bequests totalling £2300, which include the Presbyterian Church for its orpihanages, £1000; Presbyterian Women 's Missionary Union, £200; Mission to Lepers, £500; British and Foreign Bible Society, £200; Oversea1® League, £200; Dr. Barnardo's Homos, £100. The late Miss Buchanan gave £8000 to various orgahisations less thaii two years ago, and, with her sister, Miss J. Buchanan, of Hawera, founded the Buchanan Trust "for ex-servieemen of South Taranaki with a gift of £20,000 soon after the outbreak of World War II. More than 900 ex-servicemen havte already benefited by disbursement-s totalling £13,000. The late Miss Buchanan was borh in Australia. Her father, Mr. Donald Buchanan, later f armed with his brother, Sir WaltCr Blichanah, in th'e Wairarapa. The family then moved to Hawera in 1878, farming in thte vicinity of the town. On the death of their father 36 years ago, the Misse's Buchanan moved to Hawera where they lived in retirement.
