College Outing Marred By Tragedy

DUNEDIN, Feb. 20. Three .pupils of Columba G-irls ' College were" drowued at Allait's Beach,' oue of the small beaches on Otago Peuriistrla near the end of Hooper's inlet, diortly before noon on Saturday. About iO pupils of the school were at the .jeafch and * several were' caught in a strong undertow, Those who lost* their lives were : — ' WINSOME TAYLOR, aged 16, of Wairuna. ... CLINTON .HEATHER GOPLAND, aged 16, of Kaka Point, Balclutha. ItOBIN RAMSAY, .aged 14, Hyde,-Oen-tral Otago. They were all boarders at the school. Seven of the girls got into diffieulties and six were brought ashore by other pupils and artificial respiration" applied by one of the mistresses and tlie occupant of. the only house in thp vicinity. Two did not recover and the body of the seventh girl was not found until about 2.30 p.m. A launch was sent across the harbour to\Port Ghalmers- to get a doetor who was hurried to the beach in a taxi after the - launch had made a quick trip. St. John Ambulance men were on the seene in quick time and efforts at fesuscitation were intensified. It was not until after three o'clock that efforts at rfestoring Life were stopped. . . , Mention of the tragedy was made in ' some Dunedin churehes' today and the College will be closed1 tomorrow. A memorial* service will be held on Tuesday. J
