Prisoners Of War And Sustenance Pay
DUNEDIN, Feb. 18. More than 150 former prisoners of war held a meeting to protest against the rcfusal of the Government to pay to New Zealand prisoners of war ls bd per day sustenance money while they were in captivity. After a discussion during whieh it was stated that the Australian and Routh Afriean Governments had paid the allowance, a committee was appointed to worlc in eonjunction with the Recond N.Z.E.F. Association, and obtain' full evidence throughout .the Donvinion for the purpo.se of statipg a case for presentation to the Government. In a letter read to the meeting, the Minister of Defence,' Mr. Jones, said: ' ' As opportunity 'was taken when a receptibn depot was establjshed in London, for repatriated priponers to give full information as to their rights, liabilities and obligations, It is sOmewliat puzzling to aceount for the number of ex-prisoners of war submitting claims at this- stage for a sustenance allowance whieh, as pointed out, was uever granted. " A speaker at the meeting said the Government would not make such payment'if' there wrns not statute provision. "We will have to establish a morai right for the. allowance for the legal right certainly cannot be sustained," be said.
