Western Books Popular It was reported at Tuesday evening's council meeting that some 80 per cent. of inquiries for books in the Shannon- library were for "Westerns." A suggestion that more fiction books be purchased was made to the library committee. The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fltzgerald, produced a sample book of low cost which could be purchased in quantity and would be an asset to the library. Memorial Site When mention was made at a meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening that the site of the proposed war | memorial was overgrown with weeds it was suggested that a hording be erected on the site. Cr. Cronquest suggested that perhaps the local ]5icture theatre proprietors would be interested. Cr. B. Clayton said that he had approached several national business firms regarding free hording space on the site but they would not accept it. A further suggestion that a bulldozer be engaged to clear the section was made. It was decided to hold the matter over until a later meeting. Tokomaru Stream Following a discussion on the proposed financing of the extensive Tokomaru Stream improvement plan, the Makerua Drainage Board decided at its meeting last week, that the chairman, Mr. S. H. Claridge, would meet representatives of the Manawatu Catchment Board and «the Manawatu-Oroua River Board to carry out the arrangements for a subsidy a step further. A letter was read from the catchment board stating that no more than a £3 to £1 subsidy was comsidered justifled by the Rivers Control and Soil Conservatioh Council. The estimated cost of the work, which was first proposed early last year, is in the vicinity of £20,000.
