. WANGANUI, Feb. 16. The presence of a lifebelt onathe harbour mole and a former Wanganui champion swimmer, saved three gii'ls, twins agcd about 16 and a slightly younger sister, from drowning ai Castlecliff Beach last evening. Mr. Jolm P. Carde, a former champion swimmer, saw the three girls in diffieulties sonte distance out. A Fystand er threw him a lifebelt with a short length of rope from the north mole and he and Mr. David Moriarty swam out to the girls who then were almost exhausted. Mr. Moriarty watched that they retained a grip on the belt while .Mr Carde swam back along the Jine anu began towing the heav.v cargo toward the beach. The bystander, in the meaname, had procured another length of rope from a nearby car and when this was thrown out Atr. Carde attached it lo his rope and all were hauled asnore. The gi'rls, ail of whom were able to swim, were on the point of exhaustion when they reached the beach, Mr. Carde on Sunday rescued anothef girl from the same place.
