AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. At the New Zealand Band Contest "today, solo events r&sulted: — Boprano cornet: Two of the competitors m this contest were the finest he had heard in Australia in years, said Mr. A. H. Baile. These two had establislied a very high -standard and those who followed them 'were good. The majority who were lower down were gaining experience that would later on put them in* front. Placings: N. A " Thorn (St. Kilda Municipal), 95 points 1; R. McKechnie (1st Battalion Auckland Regiment), 94, 2; R. W. C. Thomas (Wanganui Garrison Baud), 89, 3. Baritone solo: 'It was the best group of baritones he had heard in 19 years. said Mr. T. Goodall. Outside the first two any of the next eight .placings could have been reversed. Placings: C. Tregutha (Wellington Boys' Institute Senior Band), 94 points, 1; SPearson (Masterton Municipal Silver). 93, 2; C. Sharf (Woolston Brass), 90, 3. Tenor trombone: The highest marks he had ever given for a trombone play er had" been awarded to the winner, said Mr. J. D. Goffin. The first eight players had scored over 90 points and afiy oi the first three would have been wortliy champions of New Zealand. Placings: J. P. Clague (Auckland Watersiders ' Silver Band), 97 points, 1; A. Briese man (Stratford Oitizens), 94, 2; C. E. Hope (St. Kilda Municipal), S3, 3. Flugel horn (own seleetion): W. Smith (Auckland Water, side), 82 points 1; R. Rudhall (St. Kilda), 81, 2; J. Creagh (Hawera), S0, 3. Bass trombone: K. B. Sutton (Woolston), 87 points, 1; J. Doyie (Hawera) 85, 2; R. S.
