Mr> Hateley has relinquished his position at Wellington. i , Card Winners The attendance at the card evening held in Laurvig's Hall on Friday by the local branch of the Labour Party was quite good. The prize-winners were Mr. J. Sinclair and Mrs. W. Picard. Shannon School Picnic Among the business transacted at the meeting of the "Shannon School Co'mmittee at their .meeting last week was the final arrangements for the annual school picnic which is to be held at Foxton Beach hext Saturday. Buses for parents and children will leave Shannon at 9 a.m. and will return dt 3.30 p.m.

School-age Children Wanted . In a letter to the Shannon School Committee recentiy the Wellington Education Board asked that a canvass of the town and district be made in order to ascertain the number of children who will be coming of school age within the next five years. The object of this canvass was to enable the board to contemplate staffing and accommodation at the school. Members of the committee will canvass allotted areas within the nexu few days. Another Classroom? In his report to the Shannon School Committee last week, the headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, stated that when the school closed for vacation at the end of 1948 the roll stood at 306 pupils and re-openedl on February 1 with 158 boys and 147 girls, a total of 305. There were 20 new admissions. This num.ber of first day admissions is higher than previously and if the usual increases in roll are maintained throughout the ye'ar it may be .necessary to make ' representation for the erection oi another ■classroom later in the year.
