Wanganui Athletes Sweep Pool
District Entrants Also In West Coast Contest The- Wanganui team of athletes swept the field in the West Coast (North island) Athletic Centre championship meet at Palmerston North on Saturday. Most titles went' to visitors. Wanganui and New Plymouth taking bettveen them 33 of the 48 championships. Wanganui also took the decision in the 'points tahle, compiling' 137 i points to have more than twice those obtained hy,New Plymouth, 61 £. Palmerston North came third with 31 points. A feature of the day was the sprinting of 1949 Wanganui All Blaclt, Peter Henderson. He vvon the senior 100 and senior 220 titles in good style, on both oceasions passing the tape a good eight yards ahead of the next man. His time for the 100 yards was one-fiftli of a second outside his West Coast record. W. J. Wells, Stratford 's distanee runucr, smashed his West Coast record for the six miles in easy style, eoniing home in 31min 53 3-10sec, which was lmin 33 • l-10sec inside his record. Wells lapped the field witli eleven to go and was one and a* lialf laps ahead oi the next man, Marton 's Gordon Bramley, at the finish. Nine West Coast reeords went by the board, six of them going to Taranaki oompetitors. Wanganui 's S. Nolan broke his own hammer throwing junior record by almost six feet and a New Plymouth junior also "Lroke Nolan's previous record. A 21-inch increase on the junior pole vault was not allowed because of a stiff side wind. The Misses L. and s E.' Couehman and P. Montague went strongly in their sprint races and Wanganui gained valuabie points from their efforts. The reeords broken were: — Junior javelin: R. Henderson, New. Plymouth, 169 feet 9 inches. Couehman led the field home in the final df the women's 75 yards to equai the West Coast record for the distanee and c.ome vvlthin twndifths of a second of the national time. S. McKenzie, Wanganui, f'ought out a grand finish with L, Dickison, of Opunake, in both heat and final, but in both events he lost by a rnatter of twc feet. It was McKenzie 's efi'ort, coupled with Peter Henderson 's initiai sprint, which gave Wanganui the senior relay title.
A iine' performance was given by Neil Bates, of Stratford, in winning the senior mile. Bates, whose national three mile junior record still stands, took the lead on the first bend and dictated the pace untii halfway round for the third. time. Theh he iengthened his stride and came home easily 100 yards ahead of Eeilding's L. Shadbolt. Peter Munro, of Palmerston North, filled third place m a thriiling senior 880. He has developed a good style over the past season. D. Adcock founcl difficulty in tucking his long legs up for tfie 120 yards senior liurdies, but he scrambled home for second aiter coming ovcr the last liurdle even with A. Crow, of Newr Plymouth. Youthful Elva Trueman, from Palmerston North, was the most outstanding woman runner for the distriet and proved that she can enter first class company. Another young girl who did well for her lack of experience, was A. Eobertson who rau and juinped against really first class company. Ken Galloway, o'f Feilding, took Koy Lamberton's title in the mile walk. Lamberton has retired from the walltiug game and was to be seen in the sixmile run against Wells. L. O'Keefe, Palmerston North, took the 440 yards flat and 220 yards hurdles senior title, and T. Drinkwater, of Palmerston North, took the 440 hurdles senior championship. Eor Feilding K. Galloway took the mile walk and high jump senior titles. It was Galloway 's eleventh West Coast high jump title. L. Shadbolt seeured W. J. Wells' three-mile senior title for Feilding.
