MORE VIOLENT THAN LAST ERUPTION.
WANGANUI, Feb. 9. The eruption was first notieec this morning about 2.45 a.m.- -and oeeasionally tremors can be l'elt at the Chateau Tongariro from explosions in the mountain. Observers at. the Chateau express the opinion that this eruption is worse than that of last May. ' Tlie top of the crater tonight looks as though it is harbouring a g'iaut bonfire, sparks rising and cascading in a- brilliant spectacle. No danger appears likely in the surrounding dislrict. A large party of delegates attending the Paciflc Science Congress is staying at the Chateau and the eruption is of great inter^st to them. The manager of the Chateau said that last May when Ngauruhoe erupted, it wm possible for parties to climb the mountain but on this occasion that would be impossible. Afr vilmations were felt throughout the da> and a noise like an ekpress train travelling over a viaduet, could 1k heard continuously. At niiu o'clock there was a gre'at shoet oi flapie visible for a long distance Lorry di'ivers report thaf rocksthrown out by the enmtion wero elearly visible to the naked ey c miles away and their passagc when they fell down the steep rslope could be elearly watched.
