Received Thursday, 9.30 a.m. ' , WASHINGTON, Feb. 9. The trial and sentence of Cardinal Mindszentv contituted a threat to free institutions everywhere and the Hungarian Gbrernment must bear the full responsibility for its action, said the United States Secretary of State, Mr. Dean Acheson, today. In New York, the Archbishop, Cardinal Spellman, issued a statement calling on all Americans to push protests against the conviction of Cardinal Mindszenty by removing "every Communist cell within our Government." Mr. Acheson said that the Western Fowers may place charges against Hungary before the United Nations on the ground that Hungary had consistently violated its peace treaty requirements for human rights. Mr. Acheson called the 'Mindszenty case' "a conscienceless attack upon religious and personal freedom.'' He asserted that Hungary had employed all "the usual methods practised by a police state" and declared this to be not justice but "wanton persecution," which had called forth universal condemnation. The Soviet-controlled Hungarian authorities sought to discredit and coerce religious leadership in Hungary in ord'er to remove this source of resistance to Communism.
