A Helicopter Service The Southlapd Hospital Board has decided to irivestigate the suitataility of a helicopter service for evacuating patients from Stewart Island in emergency cases of illness. This decision has been made because a report on the possibility of securing a landing strip at the island was unfavourabie. | Children For Health Camp On February 9, 12 children will be admitted to - the Otaki Health I Camp. Seven of these wiil corpe Irom Palmerston- North, two from Levin, two from Shannon and one from Feilding. Tne number on the waiting list is 15—10 from Feilding, three from Levin and two from Palmerston North. Large Shark Caught A 285 lb'. thresher shark was pulled up tail first from a' launch off Whangarei Heads on Saturday. Foul hooked near. its six-foot tail, the shark fought 'strenu'odSIy "ftif nearly 1-|- hours before it -was secured. A close inspection showed that the shark had originally been hooked in the mouth but the hookhad torn out. Building Permits _ Only four permits for the erection of new dwellings were issued by the Levin Borough Council during January. For the ten months of the fmancia! year ended on Jauary 31 last 90 permits of an aggregate value of £153,716 were issued. During the same period of last year permits numbered 62 and their total value .was £101,971. Some Timber Shortages Supply difficuities were being experienced with some lines of timber, renorted the building inspector, Mr. H. T. Tilyard, to last night's meeting" of the Levin ! Borough Council. He anticipated, however, that in the next three- or four weeks the position would correct itself. "During January eight dwellings were completed and , seven started, leaving the number under construction at 89," added Mr. Tilyard. j Thousands Of Jobs About 450Q.jobs are available in Wellington with little sign of them , being filled. A survey of the labour situation reveals this fact. Of the total, 1700 are for wojnen, more than 800 for girls, 1500 for men, and more than 500 for youths. Labour and Employment Department officials predict a shortage of juvenile labour until about 1954.
