Good Finish At Wanganui
Each-way favourite in a field of twelve King 's .Ransom justified the eonfidence of backers when he won the -Wanganui Cup on Saturday in handsome style, though he had to be kept going to hold offc' Avenger, to whom lie was! coneeding 291b. The Flying Handie.ap, the open sprint, provided' a tftrilling finish, with -The. Pagan snatching a head victory over Wild Note, who was only a nose in front of Travel King. ; w These were the principal events on.the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting, at .which the .only. Awapuni suceess was that achieved,' ;at . double figures, by Lady,. Oratory in the Victory Hack Handicap, for apprenticei. riders. Thogh there was a large attendance, it was slightly below that of the corresponding day last year, when the Centennial Gup was the major attraction. The totalisator turnoyer.was £65,776, a.decrease of £9037 10s compared with the £74,813 10s put thropgh a y^ar ago.. The weather was very hot, but the track, which -had been liberally watered for several weeks, provided excellent going. .
" King 's Ransom was never further back than fifth in the Wanganui Cup' but he had 'to be good to win, for Avenger made a hold bid after being u-t the tail of the field with a mile to go and then in the lead within the next. half-mile. When the tapes went up Exnbroiita cannoned into another horse and unseated his rider. At the end of a furlong Einerge had run to the front froin Buchanan, Blue Beal, Gay Strolier and King's Kausoni, with Avenger, chopped out, at the rear. Running past . tfte: stands the first tiine Gay Strolier headed Emerge and Yasda, with King's Ransom, Barrage, Buchanan and Beau Bijou next and Blue Seal and Avenger, tailing the "unch, Emerge, Gay Strolier and Yasda were in line entering the back stretch, but Avenger improved his positiou quickly and had joined Gay Btroller in the lead at the five furlongs, the pair being followed by Yasda, Emerge, King's Ransom, Barrage and Buchanan. Avenger carried on to pilot Gay Strolier across the top, but iiunie diately on entering the straight he was challenged by King's Ransom, who was lon terms at the distance. The favourite assumed command but Avenger stuek to his task and was only half a length to the bad as they went past the judge. Barrage linislied soiidly to take third place, two lengths back, just ahead of Beau Bijou and Blue Seai. Then canie Yasda, Buchanan and Emerge, with Gay Strolier last. Topvveight in the Flying Handicap, Da Vinci failed to concede weight to The Pagan, Wild Note and Travel King, who flashed over the line loeked together, just ahead of Da Vinci. Awaroa Stream slood 011 the mark and Square Dink was- slow to move, Blue .Skimmers and Wild Note being first to sliow out from Wliit.ley, Pitoitoi, Bramerton and Ella Shields. At thc half-mile Wild Note had eharge from Blue Skimmers, Pitoitoi, Whitiey, De: mure and Bramerton, and the order was niuch the saine into the straight, where Da Vinci put 111 a claim 011 tlie outside. Wild Note was elear at the distance but The Pagan and then Travel King closed 011 hini and the trio went ovei the line together, The Pagan getting a head verdict, with Wild Note, a nese m front of Travel King. Da Vinci, was right up, fourth, ahead of Bramerton, Deinure, Square Dink and Ella Shields: Detaiis of results: — WESTMERE HACK HCRDLES, £400; about 1 mile and 7 furlongs. 1-1 NEPETA, 9.7 (R.
