Menace of Communism Shown In Primate's Trial

Received Monday, 11 a.m. NEW YORK, Peb, 7. Cardinal Mindszenty is the victim of torturings and druggings whiqh have put him beyond the reach of human help, the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Spellman, said today from the pulpit of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Cardinal Spellman protested that the trial of the Hungarian Primate was a "crucifixion of humanity," and said that he himself would confess to "treason" against his country before he would give allegiance to a Communist Government in the United States. Cardinal Spellman denounced the Communists as "fiendish and ghoulish men of slaughter," who worship the gods of "Stalin and Satan." He warned the American people that they faced a conquest of annihilation unless they abandon their "ostrichlike" attitude and unite now against the Communists. Cardinal ■ Spellman spoke at Soiemn High Mass as Roman Catholics throughout the nation joined in the soiemn observance of "Cardinal Mindszenty Day," which was called by the church as a protesc against his arrest and trial. Cardinal Spellman made no reference to the fact that he was mentioned in the charges against Cardinal Mindszenty. He said: "When the Cardinal confessed to treason against the Communist regime in Hungary, he but professed his loyalty to his country."
