Cyclists Rode In Innocence
Because the Paraparaumu Amateur Avhletic Club did not secure a permit to slage amateur .cycling races on its programme last New Year's Day, an appeal by a cyclist against a trophy having been denied him after winning' a race could not be sustained at a recent meeting of t>he Wellington Amateur Cycling Centre. Peter Murray, the cyclist in quesr tion, had won the race but was disqualified for not having gone back sU yards as a penalty for getting away before the gun-fire. He entered an appeal against the decision. Tbe Paraparaumu Club disquali- , fied him; Murray appealed. But, on investigating the position it was found that the cyclists had no right to be competing at the meeting — it was an unregisuerea meeting! As the rid'ers were not aware that a permit had not been granted, it was held that they had competed in innocence, but the Paraparaumu Club has been advised that it is 'disqualified until the matter has been cleared up, and will not be able:to run any cycling events until the necessary permits have been granted.
