Cyclists Build Up Levin's Points In Hunter Shield Contest

Ray

In the Hunter Shield contest held at ihe Levin Park Domain recently, Levin competitors compi'led 66 points, which gave them a margin of 29 points over a strong' Otaki team. In looking over the results it is interesting to fiote that the majority of points were gained by the local cyciists, who met with considerable success. Maximum points in the field were annexed by Miss M. Cameron in the ladies' 75 yards, Smith in the first division of the 220 yards, C. Walker in the quarter mile and in the ladies' relay event.

In the 120 yards non-shield event Misses S. Rose, D. Williams uuu M. Cameron fi'ied the places in thot order. Miss Rose fini'shed in her usual grand" style over the laso 20 yards, wnich gave her a meritorious win. Misses Williams and Cameron are proving all rounders, having shown good fcrm in the high and long jump evenis. N. Tyres is improving in her finishes and shoul'd be among tbe place-gettei's more often in the i'uture. All round track and field ath)etes are born, not made, and I sti'l contend that some of our local competitors are overdoing this aspect at our meetings. It is evident that cn the track Ihe visiling clubs cnjoye'd a fair measure of success, the honours •;e ?inn', however, with the Levin ■cyciists. itio times recorded in the 100 and 75 yard evems could not be regarded as a true indication of the ai i'ity of the winners, as a strong follcwing wind helpe'd them considerably. Times were slower, ro'Aevci', in the 220 and 440 yards events, as competitors faced a strong westerly wind over tne last 100 yards; nevei'theless, the condiil.jns drd not detract from the merit of the performances, which were i'ought oue in excellent sty.e. Saturday's Meeting In the men's scnior events at Saturday's open meeting entries have been received from Wanganui, Marton, We'lington, Greytown, Feilding, Hawera, Petone and Featnerston. Performances submitted by several entrants indicate thni some excellent finishes should result. J. D. Cook (Petone) shoul'd make things interesting in the half-mile and mile events, as a^o should K. Galloway (Feilding) and L. Shadbolt ( Hawera ) . Tne quarter-mile should be the race of the evening with such good performers as Gordon (Otaki), Towler (Marton) and Clunie (Paraparaumu) keeping the local boys on their toes. The sprints shoul'd also provide cxcliing finishes, with Fenwick (Greytown), Johnston (Feilding) and Martin (Kiwi) extending our local iacls to the utmost. . In the junior events we find Ian Burrell (Palmerston North) with an impressive record early in the New Year. B. Fifield, of the same ciub has had considerable _success, as also has Ian Mu'dge "(Otaki), wno should perform well in open company. I have purposely omitted any comment on our local ath'etes, as tht.'ii* ability is known to most of rs. However. Whelan, Lind, the Goodwin brothers and other local stars should extend our visitors. The men's high and long jump evenis should create consi'derable interest in view of the splendid performances put up by R. Desgrand at local meetings. His opponeuts in these events are from outside clubs, with the exception of D.

JLambert and P. Ryan (Levin). ,vThe ' hop-step-and jump has not featur- | ed in Levin programmes and tnis i event should give an indication of the merits of our local field expon-, iencs compared with other emrants | of experienee. I In the ladies' events entries have been received from Misses Shirley! land Patricia Montague (Wan-| ganui, who have been consistent place-getters at meetings heldi throughout their district. From the same club, Misses Esme "and Linda j Couchman have submitte'd entries | and should make, matters interesting in the 75 and 100 yard events, in which the Misses Montague have entered. Miss Nola Ahipene (Featherston Club) has also been a con?is:ent performer in these two j sprints and is likely to bring off a Iprize. With our local girls showing improved form, the ladies' events should prove of particulaf interest in view of the successes gained by Misses Rose, Cameron, Williams and other competitors at recent outside meetings. I As pointed out previously, there; are attractive trophies to be won aird, given good conditions, the ipub'ic can be well assured of a great -evening's entertainment on Saturday next.
