Outski For Labour's "Chief Chuckerout"

Received Friday, 8.30 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 28. Mr. George Gibson, as a result of the strictures passed upon him "by the Lynskey Tribunal and his resignation from the posts of chairman oi the Northwest Electricity Authority and a directorship Of the Bank of England, has had his income reduced from over £5000 yearly to £550— the yearly pension voted . him "by the Gonfederation of Health Service Employees when he resigned from the general secretarysiiip of that organisation 18 months ago. In addition the legal costs connected With his appearance before the Tribunal have iiivolved Mr. Gibson in an expenditttre of £2000 which Ihe stated represented almost the whole of his life savings. Mr. Gibson is one of the best known figures in the British trades union movement. He hegan life as a messenger hoy on a wage of 3S 6d a week and first achieved pro'min ence in the trades union movement when in 1910 he organised a union for employees in mental hosp'itals. He enlisted as a private in the Eoyal Artillery in the First World War and ended the war as a major Vith two mentions in dispatches. During the recenr war he was vicepresident of the National Savings Movement and organised a most successful national campaign. He was chairman of the Trades Union Congress in 1941, and has heen a member of the general council of the T.U.C. since 1928. He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1946. Mr. Gibsoh is a very hig man weighing over 17 stone, and as a result of his vigorous methods in dealing with interxuprors at T.U.C. meetings he hecame known by the nickname of "Chief Chuckerout."
