America Piles Up Strategic Materials

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25. United States' stockpile of strategic war materials is now 39 per cenk. completed, the Munitions Board reported today. The chairman. Mr. Donald Carpenter, said the board had now filled. stockpiling quotas for 34 of 68 items on the critical list. Another 14 items were from 50 to 90 per cent complete. The programme was started in July 1946. The critical list includes asbestos, bauxite, chromite, diamonds, lead, mangauese, mercury, platinum, quinine, rubber, tin, tungsten, ana zinc. The list did not disclose which items had been completed. The report added that swift stockpiling of critical materials had become so urgent that the possibl^ effect on civilian economy would no longer be considered a limitation. It added: "In the earlier phases of • stockpiling, the policy was to make purchases only where they would not conflict wjth civilian demands. Under the new policy this limitation is no longer effective."
