Tliis means th-u Nanking is now within range of Com munist guns if they i'olloweil up tiie Natioualists' retreat. Unofficial reports reeord increasing Comiiiunist eoncentrations at severn 1 poiuts in Honan over 200 miles north of Hankow. Troops are presunied to be preparing for an advance down tlnPeiping - Hankow railway towardWulian cities. Reports also claim that Communist irregulars defeated tlie Nationalist division which has been garrisoning tio Cpper Yangtse town.of Jvienli about s miles soutii-west of Hankow. Reuter 's Shanghai eorrespondent say: ■Shanghai's north railway stat'ion pre sents a scene of utter confusion as de peudents of Government officials from Nanking and other cities flock there foi dispersal to South China ports. The congestion is made worse by a targtnumber of poorer class Chinese leaving for native villages to observe thr Chinese Ne\v Year falling nexi Saturday.
