Persona! A visitor to Shannon last week was the Rev. J. H. Datson, of Lyall Bay, Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Bryson and family, are at present holidaying at Paraparaumu Beach. Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Burtt and their daughter, have returned home after spending a two week's holiday in the north. Mrs. E. Chester an"d Mrs. S. Sheddon, have returned to Shannon after spending a holiday at Paraparaumu Beach. A visitor to this district recently was Mr. L. G. Hunter, who will be well remembered locally as a former Member of Parliament for 'the Manawatu electorate. Mr. andi Mrs. F. Christian, who have been spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Parr, Thompson Street, have returned to their home in Taumarunui. Mr. M. Simpson, a merchant seaman from London, who is at present serving aboard the S.S. Tongariro, spent the weekend in Shannon as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Peach, Ballance Street. Major River Scheme Further levels have been taken as part of the major river scheme from the Manawatu gorge to the sea under operation by the Manawatu Catchment Board. Investigations are continuing on the maximum run-off from the catchment area both for total quantity of water and peak flow which can be expected. Combating Theft Alarmed at the increase in burglaries and petty theft in Foxton during the past few months, the Foxton Chamber of Corhmerce convened a meeting of business men and residents on Tuesday eveing. That general anxiety was rife was evident by the attendance and a determinatiori to do all possible to put a stop to the depredations was equally obvious. Resolutions were passed urging the chamber -to press for an increased Poliee Force and the inauguration of a nightwatchman service, while other steps to d'ssist the poliee were decided on.
