Muc'h discussion followed the : submission by the building inspector to last week's* meeting of the Otaki Borough Council of a report - ' on a dwelling and workshop at Otaki Bea'ch and an application for g, permit for the work. The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, reported to the council " that the applicant, who was a builder, had waited on him soon after the . council offlce had closed in Decem- , ber and asked that his permit be j granted. Although the permit had ; mot been issued, work had been * proceeded with". - The Mayor was sympa-thetic with the applicant under the circumstances. These remarks brought a heated .rejoinder from Cr. H. W. Hakaraia who pointed out that the work had been stopped by the council because of the applicant s tiefiance of the regulations. He recalled at the Novemter meeting of the council had decided that as the builder concerned had given similar trouble earlier, he should be made an example of. Crs. G. McKinley and J. Retter agreed that as' the offender had openly flouted the regulations, he should have been dealt witn accordingly. Cr. B. J. Cook supported the Mayor in his reply which was to the effect that he considered it was too late to do anythig now, and that action should have been taken earlier. . • Cr. Hakaraia agairi opiected that "that was a weak stand to take.' After further discussion it was resolved that the permit be granted, and that the" offender be warnBd that he would be proseeuted if he ' ag'aih" eommenced- any. buildmg operation's without a permit. Cr. Hakaraia asked that his -vote be recorded against the decision.
