CIIRIBTCH U RCH, .1 an> An enterprisiug innings by F. B.. Smitli (Canterbury) and ell'ecti/e .-.bowi- ' ing by F. Cresswell _ (Marll|or6iigltjwere the outstanding f ea tures of "the match between the' major associations and a South Island eleveu which began at Lancaster Park today. Smith scored 66 of the 98 made by the major associations in its first innings. Tliis was the only ray of light in the otherwise drab batting, but it was a bowlers ' dav and there were encouraging signs that competent bowlei-s are available for the further trial. At the end of tlie day the South Island eleveu had- scored 146 runs for the loss of tliree wiekets and liere again the innings was notable' for the good score by one batsnnin nnd some iine bowling by R. II. ' Scott (Canterbury). The wicket had been covered during the heavy rain which fell ou Thursday, but iu the liiorniiig it was tricky and fast. Damp patches c.aused uncertaiuty though generally the wicket w.as easy. Conditions iniproved ih ihe ufternoon. especially after the heavy roller had been usod between the innings. Nevertheless many of tlie carlier batsmen appeared over cautious. ScoreS: ; MAJOR ASSOCIATIONS. First Innings. R. T. Hunt, c cook, b F. Cresswell 4 L. A. Watt, c J. G. Leggat, b Hoar 5 D.
