Monstrous Act Is Coroner's Comment

AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. Strong eriticism of tlie actions Of an • j unknown person who abandoned a . newly-born female child on Milford : Beach last October, was made by the ' Coroner, Mr. A. Addision, at an inquest into the death of an nniilentiiled baby ' that was found on the beach on October I 13. . ' ' Whoever disposed of the body by . cold bloodedly doing it up in a veiy , rough parcel and then throwing it into the tide, showed monstroujf callousness • and an utterly inhuman disregard for i the decencies and respect due to the dead, " he said. "The pathologist 's report is very defmite that the child i nonnally developed and had breathed but had not been fed or waslied. There , is no evidence that death was due to drowning and the pathologist states that death was caused by laclc of proper | care and attention after bixth. " | The Coroner said there might be an explanation 1 for the lack of care by , which the child lost her right to Ifive . but the disposal of the body was a monstrous act. Detective-Sergeant Lane said extensive enquiries had failed to reveal the identity of the mother. The Coroner returned a verdict that the child had died on or about October 10, the cause of death being lack of proper care and attention.
