On the Green At Otaki

On Saturday the Otaki Bowling Club's green was the venue for the first of the annual series for the' Olliver Memorial • Shield; when Otaki triumphed over Otaki Railway by 124 points to 77. Mr. J. D. Avery, president of thej Otaki, club, in a few words of- welcome, related the circumstances of the presentation of the shield by one of the older members of ihe club, Mr. H. H. Oliver and his family, to commemorate the passing of his son overseas. . He hoped tne j 'Railway members would find con-J flitions to their liking and have an. enjoyable 'day. | Mr. A. Watts, on behalf of th.e; yisiting team, thanked Mr. Avery j for his welcome and assured Otaki his team were ready for the fray. Results were as follows, Otaki rinks being mentioned first: — Buxton, D. Noble, Purvis, Walsh (s) beat Bailey, Knox, Hart, Booth (S) 25—18; J. Noble, Lambess Temuera, Pike (s) lost to Watts, Garrett, Connor, Henderson (s), 16—18; Atmore, Hurrell, Winterburn, Merwood (s) beat Hakaraia, Rich, Hook, Cahill (s), 27 — §; Whitelaw, Avery, P. Simcox, (Eaton (s) beat Dickson, Evans, Rule, Ralph (s), 34—14; Heath, Winter, Gordon, Kendrick (s) beat Diack, Marchant, Bennett, Jarman (s), 22—18. Otaki: Games 4, points 124. Otaki Railway: Games 1, points 77. Otaki therefore retain the shield, being the holders for the current term. A further series will be played at the Railway green in the near future. A weekend tournament played at the Otaki green saw a full green, with outside rinks taking part. It was won by Kearns, Bartosh, Southgate and Walsh (s) . The singles tourney finalised saw Purvis score a narrow victory over Eaton, both being even on the 20th head,-with Eaton lying two on the 21st, only for Purvis to trail the kitty for three with his last bowl. This weekend will see play for the Mexted Cup taking place at Paraparaumu, while on January 29 Otaki will pay a visit to Karori.
