Council Firm About Brick Area Decision

The Levin Borough Council on. Mqnday night .reaffirmed its , previous decision regarding an Application .from iRto. j. .W"..Clarke, to erect a temporaty offi'ce 'building pn his" property m Queen Street, 'when it was renewed at • this mohth's meeting of the council. It was stated that the buildings ; would be -of a purely temporary .nature and not afBxed to the :ground, but raised on blocks, and -that -it would be replaced by a substantial brick building when theapplicant secured a permit. Supporting the application, Cr. D. - J. Sweetzer said that Mr. Clarke's case was not comparable with others received by the council, and he thought it would be an injustice to refuse permission. Mr. Clarke o\^ned other premises, . but could not secure any of them for hjs own .use... The ,proposed huilding would be hidden from the ■street by an attractive speciallybuilt frontage. It would' be built alongside a "Are proof- wall and would be there only during the pleasure of ' the eouncii." He was supported by Cr. D.. J. Gardiner. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that that was a questionable point according , to the borough solicitors. Before the' matter could be dealt with the other motion in regard .to the proposal would have to be rescinded and he-, thought that that would require'a notice of motion, as the full council was not present, After perusal of the standing , -orders it was discovered that in cases of urgency a three quarters majority of., those present could suffice. It vfas m.oved by Cr. Gardiner, seconded by Cr. Sweetzer and subsequently passed, that this standing order be invoked and that the matter be treated as urgent, but a motion that the previous motion be rescinded was lost by four votes to two. The Mayor" said that a principle was involved where the site was in a brick area, and others had been refused. The council regretted that it could not reverse the previous decision.
