Auckland Litter Sets New World Record

AUCKLAND, Jan. 14. . Fifteen pigf? ^langhtered at Westfield : today established a world record for one litter. They represented- a total of one and a half tons of pig meat at the age of six months— an achievement nnparalleled in the pig indnstry. On the hoof the pigs weighed 4050 pounds wrhile dressed their weight was 3181 pounds. A certificate .of merif- was presented by Mr. H. M. Pierson, retirihg departmental superintendent of the pig industry to the owners of the litter, Messrs. H. W. Montgomerie and W. G. Bell, of -Ardmore, in recognition of the performhnGe. When the sow farrowed six months •ago it prodnced l6 off spring but she lay ,pn one and killed it. Tbe animals .cossumed 304 tons of kitchen wnste and milk and at the age of eight weeks weighed a total of 9461b. — a world record. The yalpe of the dressed meat is pxpectod to exceed £120. At a brief fupction today, Mr. Pierson congratuJated the owners on their c are tui breeding and husbandry which ensured the recprd. Mr. H. F. Bpyd, United States Vice-Oonsul^ also witnessed the killing.
