Swimming Stars Get 5s As Daily Allowance
Being a swimming star on tour iis not all that many would believe. Pocket money for each is only 5s under the rules of the N.Z. Swimming Association and this, incidentally, is the customary allowance fpr all amateur sportsmen and women. Shopping, they say, is quite a headache. Miss.Ngaire Lane, who represented New Zealand at the 1948 Olympic Games, has for five years been the holder of-» the New. Zealand women's backstroke . titles . and' records. - She-" also '-secured the Eng'lish 100 yards title' last year. • Miss Bette Casey 'has held- the" 100 yards and 220 yards' women's "ffreestyle titles for four years, - and.'fHe 440 for three years. She also hbld these titles for the junior "and intermediate grades, and' has ra'ced1 tne fastest 100 yards in' New Zealand. * 4. " " ' - Youngest merqber of the team, Miss Hazel Forsyth, is in her fffst year of senior swimming apd holds all the women's breaststroke senior titles an'd the junior -'records. Mrs. C. Atkinson, the manageress, is the wife of a- well-known New Zealand swimmer, Mr. Carlyle Atkinson, who has -held every N.Z. title for style and distance and still holds the New Zealand plunge records. Mrs". Atkinson is not swimming herself on this tour, but m such company it will not' - be long before she joins 'them in the water. She is very popular with the girls and takes a keen interest in -Aheir work.'
