Seeded Players Beaten 1b Championships

WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. The third round matches in the New Zealand tennis championships, continued at Central Park, Wellington, saw the defeat by unseeded competitors oi' three seeded singles players and a seeded men 's doubles pair. Miss A. Walker (Wellington) beat Miss J. MacGibbon, Canterbury singles champion, who- was seeded sixth. A. Tills beat P. Becroft,. seeded seventh. B. Broun beat E. D. B. Lusk, seeded eighth. All four men are from Auckland.' L. P. Roach and I. Easton (Waikato) beat R. V. Eobb (Ilutt Valley) and P. Nieholls (Wellington), seeded sixth. The main attraetion of the day was uevertheless the single between S. Painter and C. Angas, botli of Wellington, which Painter won in the fifth set after the 42-year-old Angas, national singles championn in 1929 and 1931, had victory almost within his grasp. Miss MacGibbon kept the edge on Miss Walker to take the first set 6 — 2 but cracked under the increased speed of the Wellington 's girl's strokes in Ihe second. Producing splendid shots, Miss Walker outplayed her opponent in every department of the game. Her net attacks were vital to her suceess. There was little between Tills ahd Becroft who f ought an interesting and well varied mateh of four sets at solid Lhough not top speed. • ; Broun, conqueror of Lusk, has given rnany Hue exhibitions over the last fortniglit and impresses particularly with the speed of his lirst service.
