Australian Timbers Closely Inspected
WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. The importance of strict inspections of Austraiian timber at New Zealaud ports was stressed today by the Director ,of Forestry, Mr. A. R. Entrican, when commenfing on the Auckland report of a flight of insects said to hnve emerged from a power pole. • Mr. Entripan said rigid. inspections of Austraiian timber cartied out on both ' sides of the Tasman reduced almost to nil the possibility .of any further in■fested timber entering New Zealand bu't it was inevitable that a few eases would escape detection. Inspections of im- - ported timber were controlled by the State Porest Service and specially trained and equipped ofticers were being appointed at the main points of entrv. Timber was released" only after it was eertain there was no termite activity. There was no cause for alarm over •the appearance of the Austraiian terI mite. This termite had been present ra [New Zealand for 20 years. and although 'it had made progress initially in Auckland and New Plymouth, int'estations eould now be effeetively controlled.
