Successful Dance Follows Sports
The success which attended the Otaki Amateur Athletic and Cycling : Club's sports on Saturday was con- , tinued at night, when the dance and presentation of prizes, which was held at Te Horo, saw a very large crowd attend, to spend a most enjoyable time. Dancing was indulged in until midnight, novelty dances being won by Mrs. W. Cole and Mr. P. Bloomfield, and by Miss D. Bills and Mr. R. Redrup. During the evening the patron of the club, Mr. H. B. Edhouse, prior to presenting the many trophies won, congratulated the club on its well-deserved success and the competitors on the high sportsmanship shown throughout the programme. Hr considered the standard of
events equal to any he ha-d ever seen, and offered congratulations to the club for the part played m catering for the sport and well being of the youth of the district and to the local competitors for the many honours won by them. Des. Smith, the Otaki rider who had won the New Zealand junior half mile at the competitions held in Dunedin 'during 1948, was presented with the medal won by him. ' Mr. Edhouse also paid a special tribute to Miss B. Hill, of Victoria University College, for her sterling efforts throughout the day, adding that the club had expressed its appreciation by securing.a special award, a club cup. This was presented to Miss Hill amidst sustained applause, which was renewed when the patron announced that the efforts of the lady competitors had been the means of a special trophy being secured for annual competition, in additon to the trophy presented to Miss Hill. Miniatures of awards won by them in 1947, which they held for 12 months, were presented ami'dst applause, to Messrs D. Batten, C. Wilton, G. R. Clunie, P. Bloomfield, R. Dutton and W. Williams. Mr. C. Pussell carried out the duties of M.C. in a most capable manner, while a competiton was won by the popular president of the club, Mr. F. Edwards, who. with the able assistance of the secretary, Mr. O B. Nilsson, had done the lion's share of the work of organising the club's efforts throughout the sea- ' son.
