Spectacular 1949 Opening For Athletics
With competitors and' the public alike out in large numoers, a highly successful eveningV entertainment was provided by tne Leyin Combined Amateur Athletic and pycling Club at the Levin Park Domain last night. The stanaard of all events; was well up to that witnessed' earlier in the season, and the addition of the high jump drew forth generous applause as the entrants, both men and women, cleared the bar. Making his first appearance in this class of , event, R. Desgrande won the high jump for men wffh the fine effort of 5ft. 4ins., and Dawn Williams _proved the best of the women competicors at 4ft. 3ins. Relay races for men, women and boys added variety to the athletic events, and close finishes were freely applauded. The cycle riders again .had the public on their toes, and four match races proved very popular. Tne riders, Watson and Harper, Parker and Smith, Roache. and Bonner-, jand Yates and Bloomfield, all put j the speed on and in every case went across the finishing lin.e wheel to wheel. The winnei^s of these four events will be matcned next Mon- , day night, and excellent races jshould result. The five-mile paced 'j cycle was- not ridden out owing to a smash, one of the competitors catching his pedal on the side' of jthe'track, and as a result the three competitors came down. NoeA Parker received the worst of it," and required attendance from the St. Jonn Ambulance Brigade * for abrasions and cuts. 'The wearing | of crash helmets by the competitors avoided any serious injury, but Parker's cycle suffered consi'derably.
