\ViSiljJuljN vjjL L/iN } Jan. y. Despite a delay of an hour and a-half in tlie starting time because of rain, good progress was made with the first round matches, of the New Z.ealand tennis champioiiships; -on Wellington 's new Central Park cour'ts. on Saturday. Seventy-eight .of. the 82 matches scheduled were put On the c.ourts though about a dozen were still inconvpleto when a further shower of rain put an end to the day's play- shortly after 6 p.m. Mrs. E. Anderson (Wellington) provided the only surprise of the day ,by beating Mrs. J. Grrahain (Hutt Valley). se.eded feiglith, in a hard slogging match extending over 41 games. Another soiid encounter was that in which -J. Hamilton (Wellington) beat L. M. Roach (Waikato) in the fifth set. They went on No. 1 court at 2.25 p.m. and finished the match three hours and ' iive minutes later. Hamilton won 3 — 6, 10 — S, 3 — (5, .0 — 7, 6 — 4, after Roach had moved two or three games into the lead in the fourth. Roach 's great asset was liis doggedness. fle returned everytliing he'could get to andkept a good lcngth. Hamilton, however, had a much greater variety of sliots and could alford to play short lcngth strokes as Roach was characteristically reluctant" to stay in at the net. Hamilton might have got througn quicker had he forced the game even more in tlie early stages. Players were fairly unaniinous in their opinion of the courts. They were playing a little slowly with a few uneven spots but considering their new uess they were as good as could be expected. They can b§ expected to speed up as the week progresses.
