Fruit Damaged By Hail At Hastings

HASTINGS, Jan. 9. For the second time within a week the Hawke's Bay received a thorough drenching yesterday afternoon from rain which was accompanied by thunder and lightning and in places hail. The downpour was experieneed throughout the province and for nearly an hour it w*as torrential, causing some surface flooding which quickly dispersed. The worst feature was the damage Oone to fruit liv hai), within a comparatively small area at Twyford. Here hailstones varying in size from a pea to a marble, cut and bruised fruit to an exi.ent it will not be possible to assess fully ufitil it gains more maturity. It is e'erain that as the result, growers in the affect'ed area will have to have some .of their produce regraded and some of it may be a eomp lete loss. The main fruit growing areas at Havelock North and at Pakowhai, escaped the hail.
