Japan Back To Prewar In Five Years' Time
' DUNEDIN, Jan. 7. Tlmt Japan would be back to prewar strengtli in live years if tlie American and Britisli occupation forces left the countrv is the impression gained during reeent trips to tlie Fai East by officers of the Eastern and Australian Line freighter Nankin wliich arrived in Uunedin_ today. The officers, who are all Australians, believe that at the present time Japan is weil controlled, and there is no indi(■ation of * the forces letting things slide. As their principal reason for their theory that Japan would soon be, back to prewar ijstrength if controls were lifted, the officers state that the Japanese tire prepared to work 24 hours a dav if neeessary. Coiumenting on the general outlook of the Japanese, Captain A. G. Rose said nothing would alter tlieir pcculiar ])sychology. Captain Rose and his officers have had many opportunities to ob/erve the Japanese. They were eager to resunie trade with other countries,. it was stated. On the occasion of the arrival of a shipment of Australian wool at a Japanese port representatives of many Japanese nevvspapers and movie photographers were present, and they des.cri-bed the event as a big step towMrds Japanese recovery. •
