Talent Quest Well Attended

Quite^ good but insufficient of it, seemed to be the popular summing up of the first night of the amateur talent quest ' presented at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday. It was a stroke of bad luck for the producer, and unfortunate for those who attended, that some of the artists- drawn for the first night were prevented from being present as following'.a mildly harrowing main featue mystery picture, the fairly large crowd could easily have been 4h the mood for some light eptertaihment. The" few. artists w.hp . appeared were. all well received and' a generous measure of.applause was accorded them- First." to appear was Mr. Henry. Meads, .who pleased as a bird imitafor. Next came Miss Maureen Baker, ,of. Palmerston North, who performed a stirring action, dance, 'dressed' for the part • as a . "two-gun pistol pa,ckin' "mama." The Murray family, -two girls and • two boys from Levin, , won approval for their vocal and instrumental items, as did Mr. J. Raika, who sang "Girl of My Dreams." A vocal duet by the Mur- , ray Sisters, accompanied by their two brothers on a mandolin and a ukulele, was excellently rendered, and the Murray Brothers followed with a medley of numbers on their instruments. Mr. J. Raika emulated some quite notable i crooners with his rendering of "Just A Prayer A\fray." i Mr. H. Jackson acted as com- ; pere and apologised for the qri-

avoidable absence of the Andrews Sisters from Paekakariki and Miss Aroha Roiri, of Otaki. Those present were given voting papers and asked to record their votes for whoever they considered had pleased most in the various, classes. The second night is to take place next Wednesday and it is underslood the producer has many entries from which he will draw the second group of artists.
