Designed A Harbour Bridge Sergeant-C, E. Gleeson, of Burnham, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year h'onours, designed the bridge which, since 1915, has connected Ripa Island, in Lyttelton Harbour, with the mainland. He also, has several ihventions in general use in New Zealand. Large Mammal Found A large mammal, believed to be either. a sea lion or a sea elephant, was found asleep on Wednesday on the beach near Gable End foreland about 18 miles north-east of Gisborne by two trampers, Messrs H. Cox and M. Blair. It measured about 18 feet. The mammal was awakened when the trampers apprpached, and regarded them with mild reproach. Then it slowly reared up and retreated to the water, where it gambolled around. Meteor Believed Seeh A brilliant trail of colour, which he beiieves was a meteor, was seen by a Levin resident shortly • before midnight last night. He reported this morning; that it was a brief but most colourful spectacle, describing it as a streak of blue with splashes of red- It seemed to him and others in liis household to be above the Shannon district. He said he was not an 'exper't on such matters, but he thought it was a meteor. He was quite sure it was not a shooting star. Collision With Train Flung high into the air when the machine he was riding was involved in a collision with a goods train at the Ellison Street crossing at Napier yesterday, a motorcyclist received serious injuries and
was taken to hospital where his condition was later reported to be critieal. The motor-cyclist was Godfrey Asbjorn Husheer, a medical student, aged 20, of Nelson Crescent, Napier. Working during the holidays at Whakatu Freezing Works, Husheer was on his way to work when the collision occurred. The machine landed 23 feet from the train and was wreeked. Tractor Injuries Fatal Mr. S. R. Curtis, a farmer and contractor, of Waituna, received injuries_ from which he later died in hospital when a tractor he was driving overturned near the Wai-, mate Gorge. While turning on wet grass the machine skidded and overturned. The accident happened in an isolated spot, but in spite of his injuries, which included a fractured thigh, Mr. Curtis crawled to a truck and drove to the Gorge Road, where he awaited assistance from anyone passing. Two ca'rs passed without stopping and a third passed, but turned back and the driver notified the hospital. An ambulance was sent out and Mr. Curtis was taken to Wainate for medical attention. He died ater from injuries and shock. Dhoosing The Lamb Something new in lambs was Jhosen for killing for Christmas on i Mid-Canterbury farm where, in ;he absence of the farmer, a city usitor and young lad were detailed -o brmg in the sheep and catch and aen the lamb, so that it would be •eady for killing or^his return that ivenmg. Told that the lamb was )ne that had been born in April, and that it had been branded across the rump, when shorn, the •wo caught and penned a sheep ;hat seemed to answer the des--fiption given. A surprise was in ►tore for them. When the farmer •eturned and went out to kill the amb, he took one look at it . and itarted to iaugh. An explanation and much banter were soon orthcoming, for instead of satchmg the lamb, the two had caught an old ewe which had been uanded in th,at fashion to dislock1 her fr°m the rest of the
