General Walter Bedell Smith, United States Anibassador to Moscow, said after a conference with President Truman today, tliat he believed there were some Rnssians who would preper a more cone Hist ory Soviet poliey towards the United States but he strongiy doubted that there was any split in the Politburo. He declined to comment directly on P.resident Truman's recent remark that "certain people" in Russia were exeeedingly anxious to have a better understanding with the United States. General Smi'th said: "I imagine that in the Soviet Union there are some people sympathetie with a more conciliatory poliey than the harshness we ,have so far eneountered but it is difiS.eult to say who they are and who they represent. There may be dilferenees of opinion in the Politburo before polic.ies are formally adopted but the organisatiqn is sueh that a cleavage with hue side artlxyed against anotner, is a little beyond my imagination. " In accordance with his announced intention, General Smith called at White House to ask President Truman ro aecept his resignation of Ambassadorship. He told reporters President Truman had not yet aecepted it but he (Smith) lioped he would do so. General Smith added: "Of coufse, if the President wants be to return to Moscow, 1 shall do so." ,
