Truck Strikes Bridge

When the steering gear of a light :ruck failed early on New Years norning, the vehicle left the road md struck the side of a bridge on the main road between Shannon md Makerua. The impact tore ( away the whole of the approach : rail, which penetrated the truck near the top of the radiator and passed right -through the cab, missing the driver by inches. The mishap was similar to an accident which occurred- on the same bridge some months ago, when the approach rail on the opposite side of the bridge penetrated a small car containing four passengers and passed down the centre of the car without causing injury. The , bridge involved is a very dangerous one and passes over a disused tram teack near the old Maranui mill. A number of . minor accidents have occurred there. During the evening of New Ye'ar's Eve a mishap occurred on the bridge at the lower end of Plimmer Terrace, when part of the hand rail was carried away. It is not known how«the accident happened and no injuries have been reported.
