WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. Finding it easier than his opponent to adapt his play to damp, slippery court conditions, C. Angas beat S. Painter 0 — 1, 0 — 2, wlien the North Island tennis championships were con tinued 'on the grass courts at Mitchell Park, Lower Hutt, tliis afternoon. Angas was seeded eighth in the tournament and Painter fourth. Both are Wellington plavers. No rain fell on the courts between 9 a.m. and the time plav was begun at 1.45 p.m. However, misty conditions develojted soon afterward and after about 24 hours play on four courts, the matches were abandoued till tomorrow morning. Four men's and four women 's singles, all quarter finals, were played, two of the men's and one of the women'?, matches being still unfinislied when rain "set in. Results: — Men's Singles * Quarter fmals: C. Angas beat S. Painter, 0 — 1, 0 — 2; O. Bold beat P. Nicholls 0—3. 0—2; R. V. Robb v. A. R. Burns 0=*— 1, 4 — 2 to Robb un finished; J. A. Barry v. J. E. Robson, 4 — 2 to Barrv unfinished. Women 's Singles Quarter finals: Miss E. Attwood beat Miss J. Burke 0 — 4, 0 — 1; Miss M. Kerr beat Miss J. Macgibbon 0 — 2, 6 — 4; Miss M. Beverley beat Mrs. J. Grahara 7 — 5, 6 — 3; Miss V. Johnson v. Miss E. Becroft 6 — 4, 5 — 0 to Miss Johnson unfinished.
