Apples And Pears May Be Sold To Consumers

WELL1JNGTUJN, Dec. ZU. "The Board has decided to recommend to the Government that regula. tions be introduced immediately permitting gfbwers to sell apples and pears direct to consumers in lots not excee'ding two cases, ' ' said Mr. Harry Turner, chairman of the recently constituted New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Boal'd, in a statement released today after the Board 's first meeting. The Board found it necessary to make some decisions as a matter of urgency to avoid -delays in handling the crop which is expected to start eoming in to . assembly points in small quantities in the next few days. Another matter which 1iad befen given urgent attention was the rates of ;advance that would ]pe paid to growers forwar^ing early fruit to the assembly points. The rates which operated last year would, be maintainecl— 46s 8d a case for f aney and commerCial - grhde, 5s a case for minimum gradb at assembly points on all fruit received up to January 31. Mr. Turner said a meeting of the Board would be held early iri January after which a decision on advanees to be paid later in the season tbgether ■Tyith the grades and sizes to be aecepted would be announced.
