Violent Storm Sweeps Over Sydney
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 19. Following a day when temperatures • reached 94.6 causing maiiy eollapses and one death, Sydney experienced a violent freak storm late yesterday. Water police reseued 51 people from overturned small craft in the harbour, eight ships dragged their anchors and .signa' ! led for help, and many roofs were' strip- | ped from honses in outlying suburbs. The fierce westerly wind suddentv ehanged'to a southerly gale which feick ed up 10-foot waves in the harbour. Earlier the heat buckled 45 feet of railwav track at the North Sydiiey Station and halted traffie. Bush fires raged throughout the day, but fo'ituttfitfely iftoVt of them wAre under control U by the time" the gah arrived. •
